As a more experienced teacher my methods have significantly changed. In part, that is because I tend to teach people 40+ who have “things” going on in their bodies. But the other part is that I have seen the effects of hard training in terms of injury and immobility.
Have you seen really muscle bound people who can barely move? That is not my idea of health, and I would imagine it isn't for very many people either. What about people who look fit but live in chronic pain? That can be one of the worst because they are trying so hard to do what is right for them, but they are still in pain. If you are a couch potato you sort of know that aches and pains come with lack of movement right? But what if you are a really fit person and yet you are still so stiff you can barely get out of bed? This is much more common then many people realize. And I personally think 40 is too young for that. It is for me anyway.
When you think about why you “work out” what do you really want? Is it the right body? Or is it to be useful? I personally want to be useful, and mobile, not bound up in my tissues I want to be able to do the things I can to help my kids, family and community. And i want to be able to do things for a long time!
There are so many reasons why our bodies are aging before their time. Most of them have to do with the C disease. (the C disease is my term - don’t bother looking it up in the medical journal. The C disease is: chair, couch, computer, and convenience.
Why? I love Katy’s quote on this:
“Watch your habits, for they become your posture.
Watch your posture, for it creates your boundaries.
Watch your boundaries for the restrict your growth.
Watch your restrictions, for they create immobility.
Watch your immobility, for it becomes your illness.” —Katy Bowman
If not, see Katy’s article on Captivity (her C word). http://www.katysays.com/diseases-of-captivity/
So, there are many things we can do to stop this cycle. One of them is rolling. We use the foam rollers, but much more often (as they are much more effective), the Yoga Tune Up balls. This is one of the best ways to restore mobility to stiff and sore joints.
We have two workshops coming up and we would love to see you there. We can roll away our worries and stiffness in 90 minutes - and the years will feel like they melted away.
